Rebuilding Together San Francisco
Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF) preserves affordable homeownership and promotes safe housing and neighborhoods by responding to the repair needs of low-income families, seniors, neighbors with disabilities, and the nonprofit and community spaces that support them.
RTSF was formed in 1989 through a grassroots collaborative response to the Loma Prieta earthquake and over the past 31 years has established its reputation as a reliable and committed community partner, providing free repair services for over 4,000 low-income households and 380 community facilities.
The mission of RTSF is to repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives. The work of our organization builds community resilience and economic stability for neighbors at risk of displacement, increases mobility, safety, and independence for seniors and neighbors with disabilities, and reserves affordable housing for San Francisco families.
RTSF has become the primary provider of free home repairs in San Francisco to those who are physically or financially unable to maintain their homes on their own. We support close to 300 households per year, with services including home safety assessments, fall, and fire prevention modifications, critical home repairs, ramps, stair lifts, deck, and HVAC repairs, and new programs that address disaster preparedness and earthquake safety, and reduced isolation with weekly wellness calls.
By rehabilitating existing affordable homes for low-income families, keeping our neighbors safe, and supporting the security of under-served neighborhoods, we have preserved thousands of units of affordable housing while ensuring advocacy and safety for our most vulnerable and valuable community members.
- RTSF population we serve
RTSF primarily serves historically Black neighborhoods with high rates of homeownership by older, low-income individuals of color experiencing rapid displacement. While only 5.2% of SF residents are Black, 50% of those we serve identity as Black and 80% are of color.
The average client we serve has a household income of $21k is 71 yrs old, and has lived in their home for 32 years. Our clients are 65% senior citizens, 35% disabled, and 58% in female-led homes. These households are often in conditions that are very unsafe, unsustainable, and are home to challenges beyond housing affordability and stability.
