“We provide education to encourage people to vote and participate in government”-Michelle Moritz

Welcome to our 2022 Election Show. Given all the propositions on both a State of California level as well as the usual too many propositions to understand on the City of San Francisco level we wanted to bring together two wonderful subject matter experts to help us better understand both the Pros and Cons of both State and City propositions. This episode features the voices of Michelle Moritz the Speakers Bureau Chair of the League of Women Voters of San Francisco and Madison Alvarado a Reporter and the Co-Creator of the San Francisco Public Press Election Guide.

Michelle Moritz

Michelle Moritz joined the League of Women Voters of San Francisco in 2016. She has volunteered primarily with the Voter Services Committee, running voter registration drives in the community and at high schools and community colleges. Michelle has also led many of LWVSF's legislative interviews and assisted with candidate forums. Originally from Chicago, Michelle grew up in the great outdoors, horseback riding, hiking, and skiing, and she still enjoys outdoor recreation whenever possible. Michelle received a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Carnegie Mellon University and has worked as a research scientist at UCSF for 30 years. Michelle Moritz is serving as the Speakers Bureau chair and contributing to writing the LWVSF Pro/Con Guide (https://lwvsf.org/procon)

Madison Alvarado

Madison Alvarado is a reporter based in San Francisco who is interested in California’s housing crisis, environmental justice and structural inequities. In addition to her reporting on public housing and rent relief at the Public Press, she has covered issues related to the coronavirus pandemic, housing and city government for San Francisco news site Mission Local. Madison is passionate about the intersection of journalism and the study of systemic inequality.

The League of Women Voters of San Francisco

The League of Women Voters of San Francisco is a nonpartisan political nonprofit that defends democracy. We provide education to encourage people to vote in elections and participate in government. We also engage in advocacy to influence public policy that benefits the community. People of all genders are welcome. We do not support or oppose candidates or political parties.

The San Francisco Public Press

The San Francisco Public Press is a nonprofit, noncommercial news organization that publishes independent public-interest journalism about under-covered topics, with a focus on under-served audiences. Online, in a quarterly newspaper and on community radio station KSFP-FM, we offer local investigative and solutions reporting. Coverage areas include environmental protection, housing affordability, public health, transportation safety, homeless services, digital privacy, immigration and elections. Signup for the newsletter to stay informed about local news.

Our values:

  • We are a noncommercial publication and independent from corporate influence.

  • We question those in power and amplify voices from underserved communities.

  • We believe in bold storytelling, risk-taking and context-rich nonpartisan coverage that is free from political advocacy or institutional spin.

We are conveners, bringing together diverse communities to listen, learn and collaborate on ways to address problems and effect change.

In our guide, we also have links to candidates’ websites and social media. And we have audio recordings of candidates answers to questions we wrote after combing through a community survey we did. So, we have, a lot of resources there both for the propositions and for, other local, elections happening here in San Francisco.
